The speaker at the meeting on June 5 was
Denise Ogurkis, President of Sleep in
Heavenly Peace Luzerne County. Sleep in
Heavenly Peace is a national non-profit
organization dedicated to building,
assembling, and delivering beds to children
and families in need. Their mission is to
tackle childhood bedlessness, which they
estimate to affect nearly 3% of the
population. Their motto is “no kid sleeps
on the floor in our town”. Denise heads up
the Luzerne County chapter of the
organization. She explained the process.
The organization solicits monetary
donations for building materials and
physical donations of bedding. Volunteers, businesses, and
organizations team up with local chapters and organize a build day.
At the build day, volunteers from the community build and assemble
the beds. Children who need a bed are identified through an
application process. Once beds are built, volunteers deliver and set
up the beds for the families in need, complete with mattress, sheets,
pillows, and comforter. Right now the local organization has a back-
log of 589 beds. They are looking to have a build day in the Hazleton
area in August.
