Hazleton Rotary President Alan Whitaker comments, “My parents would be so very delighted to know that the quality of the applications for the 2025 Arthur and Eileen Whitaker Memorial Trade Scholarship was so high this year, that it was decided we will provide a scholarship for not just one, but two worthy students  interested in the technology field.  Each will receive a full $2,000 scholarship.”
Daryelin Moreno de La Cruz and Faith Espinoza will both graduate from the Hazleton Area High School’s Career Center.
Daryelin earned a Varsity Award Letter in tennis, was elected to the National Honor Society, and was a member of HOSA and Executive Council.  She has been involved in helping with food distribution at the Hazleton Integration Project Program Center, assisted with daily living activities at Laurels Senior Living Community and assisted with the elderly at The Pavillion at St. Lukes.  She is employed by The Family Dollar Store at the Church Hill Mall in Hazleton.
Daryelin and her parents Tatima De La Cave Gil and Jaime Vigil Chicas are Hazleton residents.
Daryelin believes that, “Understanding the impact that community service and volunteering have should be essential for students.  They shouldn’t view it solely as a graduation requirement.”
She adds that “One of the most beautiful qualities we human beings possess is the ability to empathize with others and connect through emotionally shaping experiences.  The importance of community service, whether in the community, at school, or in student life, lies in the opportunities it provides in all three areas.  The benefits are endless, and as a student who has had the good fortune and opportunity to meet new people, places and ideas through volunteering, I can say that I would recommend all students try it at least once; the change will be lasting.”
Faith Espinoza is the daughter of Mayra Alvarado and Luis Espinoza, Freeland. She was involved in food distribution for home cooked meals given to the community and helping with activities at vacation bible school. In high school she was a member of HOSA, National Honors Society, Health Educator and received certifications in OSHA 10 and HIPA.
“Volunteering has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life, shaping not only my perspective but also my aspirations for the future.” Faith explains. “During my time volunteering with the food distribution program I learned the importance of empathy and compassion as well as the value of listening to the stories of those I service.  I realized that health and wellbeing extend beyond physical needs; they encompass emotional and social support as well. This understanding has fueled my desire to pursue a career in dentistry, where I can not only provide essential healthcare, but also foster a sense of trust and comfort in my patients.”
Faith will be studying for an Associate Degree as a Dental Hygienist from Luzerne County Community College.  Daryelin will be starting towards a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from Wilkes University.
