Hazleton Rotary Centennial Year Technical Scholarship Awardee
|
|
Darren Zheng, Louis DeAngelo and Ashley Sabia are the 2021 Hazleton Rotary Memorial Scholarship AwardeesSince its inception in 1921 Hazleton Rotary has been developing the “ways and means” to provide services for the Greater Hazleton Community. One of the ways they have done this is the awarding of Hazleton Rotary Memorial Scholarships. The first for $1,000 was given to one student in 1989. This year, as part of the club’s Centennial celebration, three area students will be receiving scholarships for a total of $18,000 for four years, as the Centennial Project for May, 2021.
“We are pleased to announce the following students have been selected as the Hazleton Rotary Club Memorial Scholarship winners for 2021.” says project chair Dr. John Madden. “Darren Zheng will receive a scholarship of $2000 per year for a total of $8,000 for four years. Ashley Sabia and Louis DeAngelo will each receive a scholarship valued at $1250 per year for a total of $5000 for four years.” Madden continues. Darren will graduate from MMI Preparatory School and is the son of Hongzhi and De Xiao Zheng. He plans to attend the University of Pennsylvania with an intended course of study in Pure Mathematics & Physics ultimately obtaining a PhD in Mathematics. Darren has been employed at China Garden, his parent’s restaurant, for four years. As a first generation American, he will be the first in his family to graduate high school, enroll and graduate from college. The daughter of Sharon and Mike Sabia, Ashley will be graduating from Hazleton Area Academy of Sciences. Ashley, who resides in Drums, has been employed by Edgewood by Sand Springs for two years and Sleepy Hollow Ice Cream for one year. Her intended course of study is Biology-Premed Track, and she ultimately hopes to obtain a Doctor of Medicine. She will continue her studies at University of Pittsburgh Honors College. Louis DeAngelo, MMI Preparatory School, is the son of Grete Floryshak and Louis DeAngelo and resides in Sugarloaf. He will attend Schreyer Honors College at Penn State University and focus on Engineering as an intended course of study. Project Chair Madden comments, “Our scholarship recipients are to be congratulated on all their wonderful achievements and we are happy to offer them this fantastic opportunity to further their education”. |

Hazleton Rotary Provides Complete Water System for 290 FamiliesHazleton Rotary is proud to announce that they donated $2,000.00 towards the Aqua Caliente Global Grant which provides a complete water system for 290 families in need in Aqua Caliente, Guatamala. President Donna Barna says, “Previously, Hazleton Rotary was able to sponsor 5 clean international projects, through a very generous donation by The Ballard Society. We are so pleased that we could help with this current project for those now in need.” She continues, “When people have access to clean water and sanitation, diseases decrease, children stay healthier and attend school more regularly, and mothers can spend less time carrying water and more time helping their families. This is important to everyone, everywhere.” On December 24, 2020 (Christmas Eve) the $130,457 for this Global Grant was electronically deposited in the bank account established by the Rotary Club of La Antigua, GUA. Despite the many restrictions placed upon us by the Corona virus pandemic, it is a true testament to the perseverance of Rotarians in reaching the funding goal. When completed, this project will benefit 290 families (approximately 1,827 residents) by providing the funds for the materials required to construct a complete water system with spigots at every household, 290 gray water filters and 153 vented improved pit latrines for the families without these facilities. All labor to construct the project will be provided by the men and women in Agua Caliente, as construction has now started being overseen by our NGO Cooperating Partner, ABPD, and members of the Host RC of La Antigua, GUA. The second approved Global Grant for the village of Paxorotot needs approximately $35,000 in contributions to fully fund its $107,258 budget. Now that we are in a new year, those clubs that were not able to generate the funds to contribute to Agua Caliente are requested to consider doing so for our second Global Grant. When residents of the village were informed of the fund’s arrival, they expressed their sincere appreciation for this extraordinary “Christmas present” provided by the collective effort of many Rotarians. Following are some of their comments. Oscar Santos Simón Roquel “I am the president of Agua Caliente COCODE. Almost 300 families don’t have access to enough water in the community. We build our water system more than 30 years ago and it was designed for less than 200 families. Thanks to the support from ABPD and The Rotary Foundation our dream of having water is becoming true.” Francisco Chalí Chonay: “We have suffered very much because the lack of water, but with the support from The Rotary Foundation and ABPD we know the water access will be possible soon, the community families are anxious to start the work on the water system, latrines and gray water filters, all this will help our health, especially our children’s.” |

Pandemic Doesn't Slow Down Rotarian Efforts to Provide Warmth to Area ChildrenEver since the Kidz Coatz project took off in 2007, Hazleton Rotary has continued the work and effort put into purchasing and delivering winter coats to area children. Even though most of the Greater Hazleton Area children are not able to attend school now, Donna Barna, Hazleton Rotary President, was bound and determined that those in need would receive these winter garments. “The pandemic doesn’t change the fact that we still have area youngsters who need warm coats” says Barna. “So, we had to improvise, but I’m happy to say we were able to complete the project this week.” Working with local retailers, primarily Boscov’s, brand new coats were purchased for children in need from all elementary/middle schools in the Hazleton Area School District. Social distancing did not permit the usual grouping of Rotarians to sort and pack the coats, but Donna and her mother, Ethel Dougherty, did that part of the preparation and the following Rotarians, taking Santa’s place, delivered the coats to local schools: Stephen Seach, Kim McNulty, Lani Drobnock, Mary Malone, Tim Genetti and Dave Haupt & Wife Mary Ann. Because of the economy, the number of children needing warm coats continues annually. Last year, Hazleton Rotary provided over 400 coats for area children, and this winter season more than 400 coats will be given to keep area children warm. Coats were delivered to Hazle Township Early Learning Center, Arthur Street, Drums, Heights Terrace, West Hazleton, Freeland, McAdoo Kelayres, Maple Manor. Valley Elementary and The Castle “Hazleton Rotary is very pleased to be able to provide this service to the community again and we hope to be able to continue to do so yearly. It does truly make you feel good to know we will be helping children keep warm during the upcoming winter.” comments President Elect Jason Brenner. |

Holiday Shopping Spree Brings Joy to Area Children“This is the ninth year Hazleton Rotary has undertaken the Holiday Shopping Spree which helps children in our area who might not have a Christmas/Holiday otherwise. As a Rotarian, I am very proud to be a part of this project! For the past nine years, with the help of Boscov’s Department Store, we were able to help 30 children, per year, in our community.” says project chairperson Kathie Oh. “This year things were a little different.” she continues, “Normally, we took the children shopping, but this year the children gave us their “wish list” and Rotary members did the shopping for them, instead of with them. We did miss the children and their enthusiasm. It just made the Holiday Season so much brighter to see the look on their faces when they found the gift they were looking for or when they wanted to buy a gift for their Mom or Dad.” Ms. Oh comments further, “I would like to say thank you to all the Rotarians and guests who helped this year: Nicole Skatuler, Michele Ustynoski, Donna Barna, Dave and Mary Ann Haupt, Michele Kushmeder, Sharon Mylet, Kim McNulty, Lani and John Drobnock. Lauren and Scott Sacco. Also, Kim from Boscov’s Department Store and all their employees and Pat Ward from United Way of Greater Hazleton, as well as, The Salvation Army, Catholic Social Services, United Charities and The Commission on Economic Opportunity. |

Hazleton Rotary Memorial Scholarship Winners Announced |
|
Hazleton Rotary Technical Scholarship Winner“We are pleased to announce that, Jessly Tejeda, 2018 Hazleton Area High School graduate, has been selected as the Hazleton Rotary Club Technical Scholarship winner” says project chair Dr. John Madden. “This is the second time we have provided a technical scholarship and we hope it will be possible to continue the practice in the future.” The daughter of Felicia Ramos and Bernardo Tejeda, Jessly will receive a scholarship of $1000 and she will be working towards obtaining an ...LPN in Nursing from Penn State University-Hazleton Campus. She has been employed at Bayada Home Health Care for one year and Giant Pharmacy for 2 1/2 years. All applicants were asked to write an essay on “How volunteering makes a difference.” Quoting John Kennedy’s remarks, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country” Jessly said, “that can be changed to do what you can for your community.” Her example of serving her community was working and paying taxes which she does now with two jobs and has been doing for several years. Jessly explains “That tax money can be used to provide things for the community such as road repairs. I am proud to say I have been working and helping my community as a self-sufficient, dependable tax payer. Now that I am in the “real world” this has been a good thing for me to have learned in order to succeed.” “I would like to thank the Hazleton Rotary Club for this scholarship, because it will be a great help. Thank you to all who took part in the decision making. I am very thankful and will put it to very good use.” Jessly explains. We congratulate Ms. Tejeda on this achievement and are happy to offer her this scholarship assistance”, comments Dr. Madden. “Her parents and family should be very proud of her and her accomplishments!” Please check the Rotary Club of Hazleton Facebook page or the Rotary Club website, www.hazletonrotary.org for updated information on club activities. |

Half of the 80 small businesses polled laid off employees and nearly 90% with storefronts have suspended operations. Hazleton Rotary Club Receives Youth Service AwardThe Hazleton Rotary Club has been granted the IFSR Youth Service Award as a result of an article published in the March 5, 2019 Wilkes Barre Times Leader (also Hazleton Standard Speaker). The article regarded the awarding of a $2,500 “Service Above Self” grant to the Minsi Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America. IFSR webmaster, Mr. Henning says, “Your publicizing your club’s relationship with Scouting has served as an example for other Rotary clubs looking for ways to promote the Scouting movement.” This is not a Scouting award nor a Rotary award, but an IFSR award and is intended to reward Rotary Clubs who support local Scout and/or Guide Units and get it publicized in the media and on-line. |

Hurricane Help from InteractI wanted to share with Hazleton Rotary a recent project that was completed by MMI's Interact Club, which is sponsored by Hazleton and Freeland Rotary. We are all aware of how devastating Hurricane Harvey was to many people in Texas. The MMI community, led by our Interact Club, collected goods in two separate drives over the last two weeks. MMI faculty member Mr. Robert Olive grew up and taught middle school in Humble, Texas, which was one of the areas that was drastically af...fected by the storm. MMI made contact with the Principal and teachers at our new “sister school”, Humble Middle School. The Interact Club then collected school supplies to be sent directly to this school which just recently opened again. On Wednesday, we shipped 12 boxes totaling 356 pounds of supplies to the school for their students and faculty! At the same time, the Interact Club collected other personal, cleaning and medical supplies in partnership with the Freeland Fire Department. One of our parents, Reese Eyerly, at The Merrick Group also ran a concurrent drive there to add to our collection. The Freeland Fire Department picked up two pick-up truck loads of goods on Tuesday! Rotarians do great things at all levels and I am proud of these students for their efforts! |

Rotary Dictionary Project 2016The Rotary Club of Hazleton has been purchasing and donating new dictionaries, annually, to area students since 2001. Third graders at all of the Hazleton Area Elementary Schools (Freeland is covered by Freeland Rotary) are the student recipients, as well as, 3rd graders from Holy Family Academy and Immanuel Christian School.
This is a yearly event done as a way for the club to introduce young people to the “wonder of words”. Many local children lack internet access, and the...se dictionaries give them all a common starting point, while making classroom dictionary exercises possible. Project Chairman Joe Lettiere says, “People think today’s youngsters only use computers and wouldn’t have a use for dictionaries, but we are finding that a lot of students do not have home computers and will use the dictionaries which they really seem to enjoy.” Assisting Joe with this project are John Beltrami and Rotary Club President Pat Ward. Additional assistance is being provided by Club Members Donna Barna, Toni Kelpsh, Lani Drobnock, John Schwear, Sharon Farver, Michele Fisher, Paul Brenner, Tim Genetti, Lew Dryfoos, Jason Brenner, De Ann Miller, John Madden, Bill Pavlick, Pat Korb, Kathie Oh, Alan Whitaker, and Charlie DeCosmo. Over 900 dictionaries will be delivered to our area’s school children. Funds are made possible by the many fund raising projects the Rotary Club of Hazleton conducts throughout the year, in particular, the Holiday Poinsettia Sale. When the community supports fundraisers like this one, they also support the various people in the community who benefit from Rotary Club service projects. |
